In the wet end, the wringer (wet press) squeezes the water out of the hide between felt-covered rollers. The hide is fed in flat, pressed through the nip and the water is drawn into the felts — here is the cycle on the production floor.

What is the difference between a wringer and a setting-out machine?
A wringer (wet press) removes water from the hide by squeezing it between felt-covered rollers; a setting-out machine then stretches and smooths the de-watered hide with a bladed roller to flatten it and remove growth wrinkles. They are consecutive steps — the wringer takes the water out, setting out opens the hide up.
